It amazes me how so much can be fit into such a small device. This feat is achieved through Innovative Smart Surface Mounting Technology (SSMT) which compresses the most advanced features into a super slim form. Another advantage of SSMT is that it reduces the number of components needed as well as the noise between the components, enabling the U600 to shave off excess bulk. The U600 measures 103.2 x 49.3 x 10.9mm and weighs only 81.5g which means you can carry it with you anywhere and anyhow.
The front display measures 2.22” and is a QVGA (320*240 pixels) TFT screen capable of producing 262k colours. The screen is surrounded with a reflective mirror-like coating which extends to the touch menu keys, giving the phone a smooth and elegant feel. On the back of the phone is a 3.2 mega pixel camera (2048x1536 pixels) with LED flash, auto focus, half-shutter and 4x digital zoom. In addition to that, it has support for video recording. All this data can be stored on either the 60MB of internal memory or the expandable MicroSD card.
Looking at the multimedia on the phone, the U600 has a music player that supports MP3/AAC/eACC/WMA formats, FM radio, TV output, document viewer and speakerphone. An interesting fact about the music player is that it uses Bang & Olufsen’s Ice Power to reduce energy consumption by up to 90% while maintaining the amazing sound quality.
The U600 has quad-band network support (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and is powered by a Lithium-Ion 690 mAh battery giving the phone up to 3.7 hours of talk time and 275 hours of standby. These battery figures are achieved through the use of Samsungs Optimized Power Usage Solution (OPUS) which assists various battery draining functions in reducing the battery consumption, in some cases by up to 40%.
Connectivity on the U600 is well decked out with support for USB 2.0, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP (stereo Bluetooth) support, GPRS and EDGE. Noticeably missing is 3G and WLAN. The U600 has support for SMS, MMS and Email and with the Samsung Smart UI software, you can create SMS and MMS from the same composer. The Smart UI software also has extra added capabilities to make usability trouble-free, and adds a PC-like feel to the phone. One such feature is phone search, which allows you to search the device for a specific file.
Elsewhere, the U600 is available in Sapphire Blue, Blue/Red, Silver/White, Gold/Black but it is still unsure which colours we Australia will receive. If you are after a stylish handset without comprising on features this is definitely the phone for you. The thin frame, reflective surfaces and a metallic look really emphasis the fine lines of the phone. The innovative design of the phone and the amazing back-end technology still provide all the features that one might expect in this day and age. The U600 should be released in the 3rd quarter and I can’t wait to get my hands on one.
